This setting is part of a series of compositions using texts from Kipling's book for children: Puck of Pook's Hill. Following Kipling's light-hearted style of narration, I wanted to write music that was simple, accessible, and equally light-hearted. Each of the settings in this series is based around very simple musical ideas and, rather than developing the material into something very demanding for singers, I have aimed to keep it as simple as possible, easy to learn, and achievable for community choirs. Where harmonic changes occur, a piano accompaniment will be of great help to the choir in some of the settings. There are optional instrumental parts that add some flavour to these songs, and the verses in all of the settings may be sung by a soloist or the whole section, at the discretion of the conductor. It is most important to enjoy the process of putting these pieces together with an amateur group — exaggerating the compositional features (such as spoken sections) will help in portraying this enjoyment to an audience. Please enjoy!
